Date:
Location:

Wellington, NZ

Senior Advisor, Safety of Children in Care

Permanent, Wellington based (other locations considered)

Our vision:

At Oranga Tamariki-Ministry for Children our vision is that New Zealand values the wellbeing of tamariki above all else.  Our purpose is to ensure all tamariki are in loving whānau and communities where oranga tamariki can be realised.

Oranga Tamariki focuses on children and young people whose wellbeing is at most serious risk – those at risk of harm and those who have offended.

We have been gifted a unique opportunity to shape a different approach to supporting tamariki and their whānau. We must work together, across state agencies and with our partners – NGOs, iwi, Māori organisations, community groups – to reimagine how we best support children to be safe and supported in their whānau and their homes.

The role:

The Safety of Children in Care Unit leads all aspects of research and advice to the Minister and the Oranga Tamariki leadership team on the safety of children in care. We have a new and exciting opportunity for a Senior Advisor in the team.

The role will contribute to measuring and analysing the harm experienced by children in care and to identifying key trends and underlying risk factors. In addition, the role will also be responsible for contributing and supporting Oranga Tamariki to make timely and considered responses to potential questions from the Royal Commission on our current approach to measuring and ensuring the safety of children in care.

This is a fantastic development opportunity for someone to join a supportive team on an 18 month fixed term basis.

What you will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in social work is mandatory
  • Strong child centred perspective and an enduring focus on improving outcomes for New Zealand’s most vulnerable children
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to clearly and persuasively present to a range of audiences
  • Strong self-management skills
  • Highly effective interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across all areas of the organisation
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross cultural issues and concerns, in particular, knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples’ culture
