Turn data into stories that matter.

Do you enjoy working with data, but love it most when it clicks for someone else? Are you energised by finding patterns, building evidence, and designing visuals that help people actually understand what’s going on?

We’re looking for a talented and driven HR Data & Analytics Specialist to join our team at the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), based in our National Office in Wellington.

This role is ideal for someone who prefers evidence over gut‑feel, is curious by nature, and enjoys experimenting with how data is presented and experienced, not just what it says.

About the role | Mō te tūnga:

At MSD, data isn’t produced for its own sake. It exists to support better decisions, reduce risk, and improve outcomes for our people and the communities we serve.
In this role, you’ll sit at the intersection of data, insight, and storytelling. You’ll work with large and complex workforce datasets and translate them into clear narratives, intuitive dashboards, and engaging visuals that help leaders and managers see what matters most.

You’ll be someone who instinctively thinks about how a page, chart, or dashboard guides the reader’s eye and helps them move from data to insight with minimal effort. You’ll care as much about clarity and usability as you do about analytical rigour.

What you’ll be doing

  • Explore workforce and HR datasets to identify patterns, trends, risks, and opportunities
  • Turn analysis into clear data stories that support evidence‑based decisions
  • Design and build dashboards and reports with a strong focus on visual clarity, usability, and insight
  • Partner with HR colleagues and leaders to understand their questions and shape the right analytical approach
  • Challenge assumptions with data, while clearly explaining context, limitations, and caveats
  • Continuously refine how information is presented so it is intuitive, accessible, and decision‑ready
  • Contribute to shared standards, business rules, and good practice for workforce reporting
  • Produce regular and ad-hoc reports, including those required for external stakeholders

You might be someone who:

  • Enjoys working with data and prefers evidence‑based reasoning over intuition
  • Has a natural flair for visualising information and experimenting with different ways to present insights
  • Thinks carefully about layout, emphasis, and visual cues when presenting information
  • Can explain complex findings in plain language without losing nuance
  • Considers the user experience of reports and dashboards as part of the analytical process

Experience with Workforce and People data and modern analytics or reporting platforms is valuable, but curiosity judgement, and the ability to communicate insight compellingly are just as important as well as how you think about data.

You’ll be part of a small specialist team that values simplicity, clarity, and trust in data, and that actively encourages thoughtful design, experimentation, and high‑quality storytelling with evidence.

If you’re ready to turn data into impact, we’d love to hear from you.

Salary | Utu-ā-tau: $78,222.00 - $94,689.00
