Regional Disability Advisor – Wellington/Lower North Island

Do you want to make a difference for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau? Work in a team who have a shared skills, knowledge and strengths base approach. In this exciting role, you will have the chance to train and raise awareness to our staff on health, mental health and disability best practice. 
 
 
What you will do?

•    Advise and guide Social Workers and Transition Workers in their practice supporting children and young people with health, mental health and disabilities
•    Identify what health, mental health and disability needs tamariki and rangatahi have and inform them and/or their family/whanau about what services and providers are available to them
•    Advocate for and support disabled children, young people, parents and caregiver to get what they need
•    Assist and develop new initiatives for Oranga Tamariki
•    Use your knowledge and skills to provide a lens over disability policies being developed
•    Put children and young person first and make sure their voice is heard
•    Work alongside non-government organisations, the community and whānau to do what’s best for our tamariki and rangitahi
•    Assist Transition Support Services to upskill and respond to disabled tamariki and rangitahi
•    Assist with problem-solving high and complex issues that arise in relation to supporting disabled tamariki and rangitahi while in care and in their transition phase.
 
 
What you will bring?

•    A tertiary qualification in a relevant field
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt to your audience
•    Strong engagement and relationship building skills
•    Ability to work independently and travel frequently
•    Good advocacy and negotiation skills
•    Proven work experience within health, mental health and disabilities
•    Cultural awareness and experience working with Māori would be an advantage
•    Empathy, patience and ability to see past what someone may be struggling with
•    Sound judgement and organisational skills
•    The ability to manage risk and make tough decisions
•    A positive outlook and supporting nature
•    A solution focus approach

What team you will work with?

Our experienced, knowledgeable team of 9 are experts in their field and have a lot to bring to the table. We are all specialists with different skills and enjoy sharing this with each other to help improve development. We are located all around Aotearoa and generally work independently but get together regularly for team building and work plans. This role will require the right person to be happy to travel frequently to work amongst their stakeholders to continue to build and maintain positive relationships. Being in the specialist services area of the business, you’ll get the chance to influence strategic thinking and have your voice heard to help us grow.
