Manager Strategic Finance



This role looks after a portfolio of MSD business groups that are focused on the big MSD picture.  You’ll be supporting MSD’s policy, strategy and transformation groups as we embark on Te Pae Tawhiti – our transformation programme.  You’ll also be responsible for building MSD’s capability to provide robust strategic analysis for new initiatives that support’s managers to demonstrate value for money and optimal use of resources.



This role is a critical part of the Finance leadership team working closely with the  Policy, Strategy and Transformation Groups.  You’ll also engage and collaborate with external stakeholders such as The Treasury, Public Services Commission and other partner agencies.   


As Manager Strategic Finance, you will have a strategic mindset, continuously identifying initiatives that mitigate business risk and make the most of  opportunities.  You will help build MSD’s capability and tools to ensure business initiatives are financially sound and will monitor business cases to ensure benefits are realised.   You will also have a highly collaborative, agile  and responsive leadership style.   


As an established senior professional in the finance space, you will have experience in strategic leadership and management within a large, complex public sector organisation.  You will have had a high level of strategic engagement with Ministers, chief executives and various committees and professional bodies.  


You will have experience in undertaking special projects and reviews in areas relating to service delivery, change management, business management and organisational performance, along with project and change management skillsets.   You will have demonstrated your ability to lead and influence through collaboration and will be able to exercise sound judgement and navigate political sensitivity.  Your highly effective communication skills will hold you in good stead.   


This is a busy, interesting and challenging time to take up this position.  We’re about to embark on building the finance team of the future, so it is a great time to be a part of the MSD Finance leadership team.  We’re also in the middle of replacing our FMIS so you’ll have a major role in the successful delivery of our second major release during the 2022/23 financial year, as Product Owner of our enterprise performance management toolset. Given the change challenges facing the Finance team in the coming year it’s critical that you have a pragmatic and adaptable attitude to your work and are someone who can exercise sound judgement and think laterally, while achieving quality results.  

Salary range: $151,482.00 - $227,224.00
