Help young people achieve positive outcomes!

We are a new Ministry committed to putting vulnerable children and young people at the heart of everything we do and say.

Here at Whakatakapokai we are a care and protection residence focused on achieving positive change in the lives of vulnerable young people generally from 12 to 18 years of age. Our youth workers help young people integrate back into the community by delivering innovative programmes such as therapeutic interventions, life and social skills development and vocational education.

As a youth worker you will manage group dynamics and actively contribute to the pro-social living environment. You will have significant opportunity to design individual and small group programmes to meet the diverse needs of young people.

We currently have openings for youth workers to join our three units:

Main Residence

We accommodate up to 20 young people between the ages of 12 and 18 in this unit. Youth Workers create and implement care and action plans which include the general social and life skills necessary to flourish in the community.

Throughout a young person’s stay, individualised interventions and supports are used to build mana and shape pro-social behaviours.

Pumanawa Independence Programme

This unit provides a supported living environment that helps facilitate the transition of young people to independent living in the community. The team work with up to six young people 16 Years and over. They undertake intense front line work with young people to establish individualised goals around well-being, social skills, life skills and vocational programmes.

Taonga Whetū

This Kaupapa Māori unit has six beds and is located within our Te Arai o te Mangai Marae. The programme is aligned with bicultural principled framework, Te Toka Tumoana. Young people are connected to the positive influences in their lives; whānau, hapū and iwi. We work extensively within a Kaupapa Māori environment alongside community based programmes.
