Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children is the new Ministry that supports children and young people in New Zealand.  Oranga Tamariki works to advance the wellbeing and positive long-term outcomes of children and young people.   In everything we do, the wellbeing and best-interests of children are paramount.  The voices of children and young people underpin the design and operation of our services.


Using the latest strengths based practice tools and assessment frameworks; you will work hard to get quality outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi. Some activities that you would be doing as a social worker with us are: primary responsibility for the assessment of caregivers and adoptive applicants, working with caregivers, birth parents, facilitating ‘Ways to Care’ training and providing advice and support across the care spectrum. Your tenacity to overcome everyday barriers and ability to drive positive outcomes will put you in good stead for this challenging yet hugely rewarding role.


Preference is given to those who have:


  • ability to quickly build rapport with tamariki, rangatahi and whanau
  • high level of sensitivity and empathy
  • great written and verbal communication skills (you will need to write court reports)
  • resilient, motivated and driven character
  • flexibility to work after hours duty roster
  • good computer navigation and typing skills
  • full clean valid driver's licence without conditions
  • an understanding of the Adoption Act 1955, Inter-country Adoption Act 1997 and Adult Adoption Information Act 1985.
