Independent Children’s Monitor
The Monitor’s job is to provide an independent view of the Oranga Tamariki system, checking that tamariki and rangatahi in care are well looked after and have what they need.
We do this by providing independent monitoring, assurance and reporting on the performance of agencies that look after tamariki and rangatahi. Our mahi checks these agencies are meeting their obligations under the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 and holds them to account for how tamariki and rangatahi are cared for.
We were established as business unit of the Ministry of Social Development in 2019 while legislation was put in place. We’re now preparing for our expanded monitoring role and becoming a departmental agency when the Oversight of the Oranga Tamariki System and Children and Young People’s Commission Bill passes.
